It's with a heavy heart that we share the news of Claude, the beloved albino alligator, who has passed away. This iconic reptile, a true superstar at San Francisco's Cal Academy, has left an undeniable mark on the hearts of many. Let's take a moment to remember Claude and the joy he brought to so many.
On Tuesday, December 2, 2025, the California Academy of Sciences announced the passing of Claude, their cherished albino alligator. He was 30 years old.
Claude's care team had been closely monitoring his health in recent weeks due to a decreased appetite. He was also undergoing treatment for a suspected infection. A full necropsy will be performed at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine to determine the cause of death.
The Cal Academy shared a heartfelt message on Instagram, emphasizing Claude's impact: "Claude was an iconic Academy resident who many visitors formed deep connections with during his 17-year tenure. He brought joy to millions of people at the museum and across the world, his quiet charisma captivating the hearts of fans of all ages." They highlighted how Claude, celebrated as the unofficial mascot of the Academy and San Francisco, received fan mail, gifts, and artwork from adoring fans worldwide.
In September, Claude's 30th birthday was celebrated with monthlong festivities, highlighting his impact on the museum, the city, and social media. The Academy acknowledged the magnitude of this loss and the love Claude received from the Bay Area and beyond.
In the coming days, a public memorial will be held for Claude. The Academy encourages sharing memories and messages for the care team via email at claude@calacademy.org or by mail to California Academy of Sciences, Attn: Digital Engagement, 55 Music Concourse Drive, San Francisco, CA 94118.
