Here’s a story that will make you question everything you thought you knew about luck and skill: A 74-year-old golfer has defied odds of 1.95 trillion to one by hitting three holes-in-one in a single month. Yes, you read that right—three aces in just 30 days. But here’s where it gets even more fascinating: Lyn Parry, from Devon, England, only picked up a golf club at the age of 58. Talk about a late bloomer turning into a legend!
According to England Golf, Parry, a member of Downes Crediton Golf Club, achieved this extraordinary feat in October. Her first ace came during her club’s annual general meeting on the third hole. 'It was a sunny afternoon, and the greens had just been sanded, so I didn’t see it go in,' she recalled. 'I knew it was close, but when I couldn’t spot the ball, I thought, Please don’t let it have rolled off the back. Then, to my astonishment, it was in the hole.'
But that was just the beginning. And this is the part most people miss: Just 16 days later, Parry did it again—this time on the 13th hole during 'Ladies Day.' 'We all just stared at each other in disbelief,' she said. 'There was jumping, cheering, and of course, a celebratory photo. Drinks were on me—again!'
Then, on October 30th, while playing casually with friends at Tiverton Golf Club, she hit her third hole-in-one of the month—her fifth overall. 'I thought, There’s no way this happens in threes—that’s just ridiculous,' she admitted. 'But there it was, sitting pretty in the cup.'
James Crampton, championships director at England Golf, called Parry’s achievement 'astounding.' 'The odds are mind-boggling,' he said. 'Most golfers never experience a single hole-in-one, let alone three in one month.'
But here’s the real kicker: Parry’s streak comes as her handicap has plummeted by nearly seven strokes since May. 'The best part is that I’m improving—and I’m not exactly a spring chicken,' she joked. 'It proves you’re never too old to chase your passions or improve your game.'
Parry’s journey into golf began after years of listening to her husband talk about the sport. 'It’s such a social game,' she explained. 'And it teaches you incredible self-discipline. It’s just you against the course—and let’s be honest, the course usually wins.'
Now, here’s a thought to chew on: Is Parry’s achievement a once-in-a-lifetime stroke of luck, or does it highlight the power of persistence and late-life learning? Let us know in the comments—do you think age is just a number when it comes to mastering a skill? Or is there something more to her story?
